A third party gained access to these Verizon accounts using the last four digits of the citation cards used to make automatic payments between October 6 and october 10. This account access potentially enabled attackers to process unauthorized SIM card changes. in successful SIM swapping attacks, a counterfeit phone can live used to receive text messages for password resets and user recognition verifications on other accounts; therefore, affected customers are advised to secure their non-Verizon accounts, such as social media, financial, and email accounts. Verizon proactively reversed unauthorized SIM card changes and reset the account certificate code (PIN) of affected customers. Verizon also encouraged customers to create a new stick code, password, and security query and consider enabling number interlock through the My Verizon app or website.
